Overview

Semporna is a town located on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It is known for its stunning marine biodiversity and serves as a gateway to some of the most famous diving and snorkeling spots in the world, including Sipadan Island, Mabul Island, and Kapalai. These islands are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life, making Semporna a top destination for scuba divers and underwater photographers.

Founded in the late 19th century, Semporna has grown from a small fishing village to a bustling town that attracts tourists from all over the globe. The town’s name, “Semporna,” means “perfect” in Malay, reflecting the area’s natural beauty. The local population is a mix of ethnic groups, including Bajau, Suluk, and Chinese, contributing to a rich cultural tapestry.

Semporna is also known for its unique floating villages, where the Bajau Laut, or Sea Gypsies, live in stilt houses built over the water. These communities maintain a traditional lifestyle, relying on the sea for their livelihood.

In addition to its marine attractions, Semporna hosts cultural festivals and events that showcase the local heritage, such as the annual Regatta Lepa, a boat race celebrating the Bajau people’s seafaring traditions.

While Semporna is primarily recognized for its proximity to world-class diving sites, it also offers opportunities for exploring the local culture, cuisine, and natural landscapes, making it a diverse and enriching destination for travelers.
